Banarasi Carpet of Malgaon

Malgaon is a village in Kaliaganj block of Uttar Dinajpur District where weavers have been stitching Banarasi-style carpets since the 1980s, famous for the excellence in quality and design, specializes in traditional Indian woolen carpets and Durries. Every carpet that is woven here has a distinctive grace and unmatched style. The village has earned the nickname, 'Carpet Gram' (meaning 'Carpet Village').
In 1978, a resident of Malgaon, Abu Taher, took an interest in carpet weaving after visiting Varanasi that same year. Intrigued by the mechanisms of weaving those beautiful carpets, he memorized them and brought the technical knowledge back to his village.
By 1985-1986, Taher had passed down the vital knowledge to the children of Malgaon.
About 300 women weave Banarasi Carpets in that village at present. Around 40 carpets of various sizes are made in Malgaon every month.
